To learn cello, you must first learn about the instrument itself, its parts and functions of each part. To help you with the basic information on the cello, here are its parts and each one’s functions:

  • Scroll- is the curve portion on the top end of the cello.
  • Pegs- are used in tuning the instrument.
  • Fingerboard- is the longest part wherein the strings are pressed to play the desired notes.
  • Bridge- holds the strings away from the cello.
  • F-Holes- allows the strings to vibrate efficiently to produce a sound.
  • Tailpiece- holds the strings.
  • Spike -supports the cello’s weight and allows adjustments to its height.

In playing the cello, one of the most important techniques to learn is bowing. The quality of bowing greatly affects the quality of the music being played. To hold the bow properly, remember to just hold it lightly between the tips of your fingers. Your thumb should be on the underside of the bow for support. To produce excellent music, your grip needs to be relaxed to allow for more efficient and graceful movement of the bow on the strings. When finding the right bow, you have to consider many things - weight, balance, flexibility and strength. The heavier bows are bulkier but the lighter bows, though easier to handle are much more difficult to control when maintaining a forte. A stiffer bow produces a shallow sound because the hair is so tight that it barely touches the strings while a softer bow produces a much fuller sound because it is more flexible and more hair is in contact with the strings but has a delayed response compared to the stiffer bow.

For faster learning, attaching or taping markers on the frets to guide your fingers will prove very useful. This will help you familiarize and easily remember the positioning of the fingers on the frets. Remove the markings just as soon as you have memorized the finger placements on the board. In addition, you will have to master the art of moving your hand independently of one another. One hand is used to change notes on the fingerboard while the other hand is used to handle the bowing. You will find that these independent hand movements are much more complicated but with constant practice you will soon get the hang of it.

After learning all the basic techniques in playing the cello, practice bowing on open strings first then gradually progress to a much harder piece. Memorizing the passage so that your senses are all tuned in enhances the flow of the music as you play. Learn cello step by step by mastering one piece before starting the next one to avoid mix ups and try different pieces to widen your experience in playing the instrument. Do not think twice about trying on a difficult piece for it will challenge you to improve your skills and knowledge of music.

To become an expert cellist, you have to indulge yourself in strenuous practice to master each piece. Always keep your goals in mind and rise to every challenge you meet in your lessons in order to prepare to become a master cellist. Playing the cello by heart is like communicating your emotion towards the listeners. It will enable you to bring the magic of music to your listeners as it also allows you to unveil your deepest emotions through your playing.
