One of the fundamental things to learn when you first begin is making sure you know your bass notes. If you do not know the notes on your bass then you are going to find everything else much harder. Learning the bass notes can seem impossible but it can be done if you put in a little effort. Like most things in life it is simple when you know how.

Due to the notes on the bass being laid out in patterns it is much easier to learn then if each note was random. The open strings are one of the things you need to know before you move on. The names of the open strings and E, A, D and G. The thickest string is the E and the thinnest is the G. After you are comfortable with the names of the open strings you can the progress onto learning the rest of the notes.. Knowing the musical alphabet is one of the key things you need to know to do this. The musical alphabet goes from A to G and some of the notes have flats and other have sharps. By knowing the musical alphabet you can use this information to work out where all the notes are. Working out where all the notes are can be done by knowing the open strings and then moving down the frets. Each fret is simply another note along the musical alphabet..
