It is crucial to learn how to play guitar chords if you are learning the guitar. In every guitar song you will have to play chords. Chords could be played in any order and strummed or picked.

Once you learn the main chords, which are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, you will be able to easily learn all the different variations of these as well. To play these chords you must hold your hand on the neck of the guitar and use your fingers to hold certain strings on specific frets. A variation of a chord could be changing the positioning of the chord and making it minor.

The two main things you need to know about in order to play chords are the frets and strings on the guitar. The six strings on the guitar are in the order from bottom to top: E, A, D, G, B, and E. The frets are bars that run down the neck of the guitar. The highest fret is the one closest to the base of the neck. If you read tabs they will tell you which strings to hold down on which fret in order to play a specific chord. So to play a G chord, the low E string would be held on the third fret, the A string would be held on the third fret, the high E string would be held on the third fret, and the B string would be held on the second fret.

After you have the correct strings held down on the correct frets, you would then play the chords by either strumming the guitar or picking the strings. If you are reading tabs you will see the notes placed one on top of the other in order to demonstrate strumming the chord. However, if the notes are spaced far away from each other then you will pick the individual strings. It can also be up to you to strum or pick the chords.

It is important to practice these seven chords. Most guitarists will play each of the seven chords over and over and practice moving the position of the hands quickly. As soon as you are able to play these chords by memory quickly, you will be able to easily learn the other chords.

When you are first learning your fingertips will probably hurt. After playing for a while your fingers will develop calluses and it will be easy to play. If the chords do not sound right then you probably have to hold down the strings harder.

Remember to practice, practice, and practice more. After you memorize the chords, you will find it very easy to learn songs on the guitar.
