My mother once said: “You never grow old, if you never stop learning.” I was just 20 at the time and did not really understand her meaning. My reaction was: “How boring to be studying for the rest of my life.” Now I fully understand, just as many adults do. There will always be something that you wish you had done or learned.

There are some who never get to do these things, while many others see the value of continued learning. This is what many people feel about music. Some of us never had a chance to learn to play a musical instrument as children. For most people, this is accomplished in adulthood. Now me, I’ve always dreamed of playing the drums.

But the question was how to select the right type of adult drum lessons? I did a little research and found out that there are many sites offering online tutorials or teach yourself lessons. However, these were not the right option for me, but it is right for some. Let me list for you the advantages and disadvantages of each learning method for adults so that you can analyze what will work best for you.

The Teach Yourself Method

Some adults feel more comfortable learning at home. They will be able to dictate the speed of the lessons and pick up videos and books to help them learn. The only drawback to this method is that the learning process is slow, and you have to be extremely committed to learning to play the drums for this to be effective. It is very easy to get off schedule, forget about practicing or let your life events interfere with your learning process.

The Online Method

Now with the advent of technology lots of adults can obtain adult drum lessons online. Many people find this arrangement very convenient for them. Help and support are always available anytime of the day online. They learn when and where they want and do repeats of lessons as often as they want. It will require you to have extraordinary self discipline to keep on practicing in the face of the many demands of family, school or work obligations. Of course, if you are a night owl, can’t sleep and have a sound proof room in which to practice then this may be the method for you.

Private Adult Drum Lessons

Many of us love private lessons. A private class will have a regular schedule for the music lessons and you have to set aside everything else to attend them. Another great advantage to the private class is the fact that there are no young players, no one to outdo you or out learn you. You learn at your own pace and get the full attention of the teacher. One discouraging thing about private classes is the cost. You will be ok if you have the means to enroll in at least two classes a week. If you can afford just one class a week, then you should consider other methods of learning.

Drumming School

The next option on the list is drumming school. Here you will probably take a class with a few other learners, but you would be surprised at how much you might have in common with other learners. Just be sure to ask about the type of music taught and whether there will be pieces taught which you enjoy. In this option you get more than one class a week for a set fee. You will meet many other music lovers and share ideas and techniques with them, too.

The final decision of which drumming school to enrol in will be yours to make. Remember also to choose the lessons according to your requirements. Think about what you want to obtain and the best way you learn.
