Tips On How To Improve Singing
The most crucial aspect of good singing is proper breathing. Proper Breathing is imperative for a good vocal range and to increase a singer’s stamina. The following exercises can successfully help you to improve singing.
With proper breathing you can increase your endurance and improve breath control so that you have a wider vocal range. People who breathe through their chest cannot get the really high notes and their voice lacks the floating quality. Most faulty breathing habits are inculcated in our childhood. These eventually creep into our singing as well.
A clear sign of improper breathing is an upwards movement of the chest and shoulders when w breathe. Since proper breathing includes letting your stomach expand most people refrain from it because they feel it will make them look fat. However you need to understand that in order to achieve the really high notes you will have to breathe through the abdomen.
Many people also believe that if you breathe noisily you’re doing it right. However, your breathing would be noisy only if there is a constriction in the air passage; this would mean you are not breathing properly. In correct breathing even though the inhalation is deep yet no noise is made while breathing.
For deep breathing you need to make sure that you inhale in sips instead of gulping the air. Proper breathing will cause you chest cavity to expand giving more room to the lungs to intake the air. Some exercises which will help you to breathe correctly are.
Inhalation Activity:
Start by lying flat on your back. Take a deep breath and feel the wave of movement start at your chest and diaphragm. Feel your chest and diaphragm expanding but make sure to not move your shoulder muscles. Leave your abdominal muscles loose and let the wave reach your stomach feeling the stomach expand as you fill your lungs entirely.
Repeat the exercise once more start by inhaling deeply but make sure that your shoulders do not move the only movement should be the outwards expansion of the chest and the stomach. If your shoulders move when you breathe it would indicate that you are not breathing correctly. When you breathe correctly your chest, diaphragm and stomach will expand. You will also feel the muscles at the sides of the rib cage moving to accommodate the expanding lungs.
Exhalation Exercise:
In this exercise you will try to move the flame of a candle with your breath so start by placing a lighted candle 8-9 inches away from your face.
Take a deep breath, like in the previous exercise with outward movement of the stomach and chest but no movement of the shoulders.
Feel the air filling your lungs and then breathe out gently in the direction of the flame bending it but not flickering it.
When you exhale you will have to let out the air in a steady stream otherwise the flame will flicker instead of bending. While you exhale also try and notice the time for which the flame is kept bent in another words you are trying to find out for how long you can exhale.
These exercises will help you to achieve the breath control needed to sing a long phrase or to keep up the high note for a long time. Try to increase the amount of time of steady exhalation each time you try this exercise.
