You need a special gift for a special person. Maybe you’re walking down the street on a sunny day and it feels like you’ll burst if you can’t express how good you feel. How can you say it in the best possible way?

Have you ever felt as if words just don’t cut it to express your feelings? That might be life’s deepest frustration. When you need a way to connect, put it in a song. Find a place to be alone and let it out - don’t let anything distract you. A verse-chorus structure goes best with a happy song. To keep things focused, that’s what we are going to write.

Melody and Lyrics are the two components of a song.

1) The Melody - This is a living, breathing thing The air around you sings with melodies. Catch one. Let your imagination snare one and dance with it.

-Just a few notes will come first. Don’t try to force a melody, release it. The first notes lead to more which wants to complete the phrase. Play with a few modifying variations.

- Use a recording device and record the best ones. Hum the melody or sing la la la. You don’t have to be able to write music, but if you don’t keep a record, you’ll forget your melody like you do a dream.

- Even if you’ve never written a note before, you know how to compose a melody, you don’t need training for that. You don’t need to study music theory - if you can talk, you know how a musical phrase is constructed.

2) The structure of a song is determined by the lyrics. A verse-chorus structure is the best one for an upbeat song. That might be why it has been the most popular form for almost a hundred years.

-The chorus should be written first. That is the main idea, the point, the focus of the song. This is the core of what you want to say, It’s important to use active descriptive, colorful verbs and specific descriptions, following the line and rhythm of the melody.

- The song’s title is ready made. Its the part of the song that stands out. It is usually the first word or words of the chorus because that is what people will remember. The chorus drives home the point of the lyric and it is repeated after each verse.

- The chorus is explained by the verses. Each verse explains the chorus a little more. The melody of the verse complements the melody of the chorus in the same way that the words of the verses explain those of the chorus..

- A song lyric is not a poem. Focus on being direct with just one idea in your lyric, keep it very simple. Each verse elaborates a little more on the chorus. Whether or not it rhymes is up to you but it should follow the rhythm set by the melody.

- Try to make the words fit the music as closely as you can;when the music goes up, the words should be increasing in emotion and excitement. For that reason, the chorus usually begins on a high note. A rising melody puts emphasis on what is being said in the lyric,

Study the Beatles song “Yellow Submarine” as an example of  a verse chorus structure. This is a nonsense song of course but, true to the structure, its a happy one too. Notice how the story is told in the verses and the core is in the chorus. When the chorus comes in, it begins on a high note to amplify the emotional value and emphasis. While a very simple song, its also memorable.

The chorus is as simple as can be and right to the point. You have a song just as good in you. Bring it out
